An egress window is a window designed to be large enough for a fireman to climb in or a person to climb out of in an emergency. U.S. Building Codes require each bedroom of your home to have an emergency exit window.

There are minimum size specifications. U.S. Building Code also requires an egress window in the basement if habitable rooms will be finished. If you have a bedroom in the basement an egress window is required in EACH basement bedroom. If you have other habitable rooms in the basement like a hobby room, game room, movie theater or any other finished room, you will also need an egress window. Egress windows are designed to give you and your loved ones a way out and firefighters a way in to rescue you in an emergency!
